Cabbage StirFry

A delicious South Indian vegetarian side dish.
Preparation Time : 5 mins

Cooking Time : 10-15 mins

Serves : 4-5

Ingredients:
  • Cabbage - 1/3 of medium or 200g
  • Onion - 1 small
  • Black mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Urid dal - 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 5-6
  • Dry red chilli - 1 for medium spicy and 2 for very spicy
  • Cumin (jeera) powder - 1/2 tsp (optional)
  • Grated coconut - 2 tsp (optional)
  • Cooking oil - 3 tsp
  • Salt - to taste
  • Water - as required

Method:
  1. Wash and shred the cabbage coarsely.
  2. Chop the onion finely; Break the chilli into 3-4 pieces.
  3. Heat a pan on the stove and add oil.
  4. When the oil is hot enough, add mustard seeds, urid dal, red chilli and curry leaves; Saute for a minute.
  5. Add the chopped cabbage, onion and salt; Stir-fry for few minutes.
  6. Add a tablespoon of water. Cover and cook for about 5-10 mins.
  7. Open the lid and stir the cabbage a few times whilst it is cooking to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
  8. Once the cabbage is cooked, add cumin powder and fry for a further 1-2 mins.
  9. Once ready, garnish with grated coconut and serve.
Notes:
Use Green chilli instead of Dry red chilli if you prefer Green chilli. Suitable for rice and <a href="/recipes/Tamarind-egg-Curry">Tamarind Egg Curry</a> or <a href="/recipes/Tamarind-egg-omlette-curry">Tamarind egg omlette curry</a>.
