Dhal curry with eggs

Dhal curry with eggs is an occasional dish that are made in Southern towns of Tamilnadu, India on special occasions.

Ingredients :

 

  • Toor Dal - 150g or 2/3 of a 250ml teacup
  • Onion - 1 medium
  • Tomato - 1
  • Chilli - 2
  • Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tsp
  • Egg - 4
  • Cooking oil - 2 tblsp

Spice powders:

  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Ground Fennel seeds (Sounff or Perunjeeragam ) - ½ tsp
  • Chilli powder - 1 tsp
  • Cumin (jeera) powder - ½ tsp


Method :
  1. Cook Toor dal with turmeric powder and water in a pressure cooker for 3 whistles.
  2. Cut onion into long slices, tomato and chilli into small pieces.
  3. Heat oil in a 2-3 ltr saucepan.
  4. Add onion, tomato, ginger-garlic paste and chilli and fry for few minutes.
  5. Add all the spice powders except cumin and turmeric powder and fry for about a minute.
  6. Add about 1 cup of water and allow it to boil.
  7. Add cumin powder, salt and dal to this saucepan and stir well.
  8. Break one egg at a time into the ladle in case to avoid the spoilt egg and pour it into the saucepan; cover and simmer for few minutes to make a poached eggs.


Notes : This curry goes well with Ghee Rice.
