Pongal

Pongal is a sumptuous meal eaten for breakfast in Southern parts of India. It is made of Rice and Dal.

Ingredients :

 

  • 2 cup broken raw rice
  • ½ cup moong dal
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1½ tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
  • 6 – 8 cashewnuts
  • ½ cm cube ginger (optional)
  • 1 – 1½ tsp salt
  • 2 – 3 tblsp butter/ghee
  • 5 – 5½ cups water
  • 1 sprig curry leaves


Method :
  1. 1. Fry the dal in a dry kadai until golden brown. Wash the fried dal and rice.
  2. 2. Boil water in a large stockpot. Add dal and rice. Stir frequently while it is being cooked. When it is nearly done add salt. Make sure that the cooked rice and dal are cooked well and soft like porridge consistency;Switch off the heat.
  3. 4. Heat butter/ghee in a wide frying pan; Add crushed jeera and pepper, grated ginger pieces and broken cashewnuts and let them become golden brown; Few curry leaves may be added for extra flavour. Add this seasoning to the cooked rice and dal; stir well.
